Sterling Ruby’s solo exhibition at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, is the first comprehensive museum survey of the multimedia artist to date. In a combined effort by the ICA Miami and the ICA Boston, the exhibition showcases over 100 works by the artist starting this November; representing nearly two decades of his career.
Ruby’s mixed media practice includes ceramics, soft sculptures, large-scale installations, photography, collage, textile, and video. The usage of recycled scraps from previous projects across mediums is the hallmark of his artwork. The multifaceted artist recently launched his clothing label S.R. Studio. L.A C.A. as an addition to the narrative of his artwork, that arose from experimenting with denim as well as leftover textiles.
His work explores a wide range of subcultural themes such as power, patriotism, violence, repression, incarceration, waste and consumption, social marginalization, bodybuilding, graffiti and craftsmanship. The exhibition will open at the ICA Miami this November 7 through February 2, 2020. The exhibition will travel afterwards to the ICA Boston, and will be available for viewing from February 26 until May 26, 2020.
