Forty years after the release of his visionary album Refavela, Gilberto Gil is bringing tropicália to Berlin. He will be performing his classic album of the 70s with an exclusive formation of singer Mayra Andrade, percussionist Domenico Lancellotti and an international ensemble of musicians on the roof terrace of Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW).

During the 60’s, Gilberto Gil combined rhythms of bossa nova with rock ‘n’ roll in a remarkable way. Along with Caetano Veloso, he thus became a leader of tropicália movement. Their critical lyrics made them a target of censorship by the military government, leading to their arrest and imprisonment, and eventually to their exile to London.

Produced in 1977 after his experiences in exile in London and a trip to Nigeria, Refavela brings together afro-Brazilian influences merged with funk, reggae and Afrobeat thus creating a unique multicultural world-sound.

Joined by family members, friends and colleagues, Gilberto Gil is celebrating Refavela’s fortieth anniversary on-stage this July 19th.
